11 AMAZING facts about Kisumu City you most likely do NOT know

Kisumu City will be hosting the 92nd Rotary District Conference and Assembly (DCA), scheduled for 20th to 23rd April, 2017. I fished out (pun intended) some amazing facts that I bet you did not know. 

1. Kisumu hosted the first air flight in East and Central Africa; an inaugural mail flight from Kisumu to England in 1931.

2. In October 1900, the 62-ton ship SS William Mackinnon was reassembled and registered in Kisumu and made its maiden voyage to Entebbe. The SS Winifred (1901) and the SS Sybil (1901) were later added to the fleet in 1902 and 1904 respectively.

3. Grace Onyango was elected as mayor of Kisumu town in 1965. She become the first woman mayor in Africa.

4. New Nyanza Provincial Hospital is locally referred to as a ‘Russia’ because it was built with funding from the Soviet government in the 1960’s.

9. The famous town clock on Oginga Odinga street was unveiled on 19 August 1938 by the then Governor of Kenya Sir Robert Brooke-Popham.

11. Some of the white settlers actually believed, erroneously that it derived its name from ‘sumu’ – a Swahili word meaning poison because of the dangerous malaria-carrying mosquitoes in the area.

As you plan to attend the Rotary District Conference and Assembly (DCA), scheduled for 20th to 23rd April, 2017, below are important items to note:

  1. You can register online >> www.92dcakisumu.com and you will receive a notification email from the conference committee within forty- eight (48) hours of submitting your complete registration. The registration fee includes conference teas, lunches, pre-arranged dinners and special events.
  2. The conference registration fee for Rotarians is graduated as follows:-
    •    Early Bird payment closed on 30th April 2016 at $150 per person.
    •    Advance registration which closes on 30th September 2016 is USD $200 per person.
    •    On Time registration which closes on 31st December 2016 is USD $250 per person.
    •    Late registration which closes on 31st March 2017 is USD $300 per person.
    •    From 1st April 2017 fee is USD $350 per person.
    •    On-Site registration is USD $350  per person.
  3. The conference registration fee for Rotaractors/Interactors attending the Rotarians conference is graduated as follows:-
    •    Early Bird payment closed on 30th April 2016 at $40 per person.

What to expect

At a minimum, your district conference program/itinerary should address the following:

  1. Schedule the RI president’s representative’s two conference addresses and the brief remarks at the end of the conference.
  2. Discuss and adopt the audited financial statement from the previous Rotary year.
  3. Approve the district levy, if it was not approved at the district assembly or presidentselect training seminar.
  4. Elect the district’s representative to the Council on Legislation, during the Rotary year two years before the Council meets, if the district chooses not to use the nominating committee procedure.
  5. Elect the member of the nominating committee for the RI Board of Directors, as appropriate for your zone.
